Auditions

Our next auditions will be held on August 23rd for our Fall 2008 session.

NCS serves 140 boys and girls in grades 2 – 12 in four ensembles. Weekly rehearsals are held in Encinitas. Giocoso (beginning) welcomes any interested young singer- no experience is necessary. Brioso (Intermediate), Caprice (advanced treble) and Capella (high school mixed choir) are selected by audition. Acceptance is based upon intonation and tuning; ability to read music and hold a part; tone, vocal technique and range; attendance and working effectively at rehearsals; and dedication, attitude and contributions to the group.

What happens during the audition?

You will meet Miel Burnett, Operations Manager and the Directors: Sally Husch Dean – Artistic Director, Director of Caprice; Monica Ward – Director of Brioso; and Pam Lindamood – Director of Giocoso.

At the audition you will be asked to :

Talk about your schooling and musical experience.

Sing " Twinkle,Twinkle Little Star" or "America"
Sing a round, such as "Row Your Boat"
Echo short melodies
Echo short and long Rhythmic phrases
Demonstrate music reading skills (Caprice/Capella)

How Should I Prepare?

The NCS audition process has been carefully crafted by our directors. The test is well rounded, measuring students’ abilities in natural musical attributes as well as learned skills. This results in students being placed where they will best benefit from the NCS experience. No special preparation is needed prior to an audition however, singers may choose to sing a song of their choice no longer than 1 minute in lenght. It is suggested that you get a good night’s rest the night before.

How will I learn whether or not I was accepted?
Results for choir placement will be mailed to you after the audition process is complete.

Where do auditions and rehearsals take place?

Auditions and rehearsals take place at the San Dieguito United Methodist Church, 170 Calle Magdalena, Encinitas, CA. The church is located E. off Interstate 5, exit Encinitas Blvd. At the second light take a right onto Calle Magdalena.

When do I rehearse?

All choirs (except Capella) rehearse on Tuesdays: Giocoso: 4:15 - 5:15 PM, Brioso: 4:30 - 5:45 PM, Caprice: 5:15 - 6:45 PM, Capella: Sundays 6:45-8:15.

What commitment am I required to make, and how much will my tuition be?

Each Giocoso singer is asked to agree to one semester. Brioso, Caprice, and Capella require a full year (two semester) commitment. Tuition is established on a yearly basis. A limited number of scholarships are available. (See Schedule and Tuition information form.)
